One of the most important tests of all the CDL tests is the Air Brake Test. Driving an 18 wheeler without good brakes is a huge hazard and every driver needs to be more than familiar with the air brake system on their truck. Knowing how to use these brakes is not enough.

A driver needs to understand in his mind the mechanics of what is happening with the system at all times during all scenarios. A truck driver needs to be able to perform all of the different air brake tests and understand why each step of the test is necessary. When broke down on the side of the road a truck driver will need to communicate any problems and or parts needed to the breakdown company responding so they can bring the proper parts and equipment. Being able to do this can save hours of the driver’s time in the long run.

The more experience a driver has with the air brake system the more problems can there are that can fixed on the side of the road without even having to call break down. With most truck drivers being paid by the mile this will save the driver lots of money over the years. When studying for the CDL Air Brake Test doesn’t just memorize the information. Try to take it in and visualize the mechanics of it all. Get on the internet and look at pictures and videos of air brakes.
